In a previous blog post series, I wrote about search engine optimization (SEO) and how to improve your rankings. In the series I explained how there are basically 4 main elements to achieving strong SEO results.

  1. Strong and frequently updated content
  2. Search engine friendly website code
  3. Link building
  4. And finally time

Today I am going to talk a little more about content and just how important it is for SEO. My website is missing two of the key ingredients, I noted above.

  1. Link building – I have worked to add links to my websites through directories, but because my website has only been up for a short amount of time (less than 6 months), I have not achieved the ideal types of links: people linking to to my website because of the strong content.
  2. Time – As noted above my website has only been up for a short amount of time, and this can be a huge factor in how you rank in the search engines.

But because I have worked hard on constantly updating and adding new content to my website through my blog and updating of the main website, I still have achieved good rankings for many of my targeted keyword phrases. And here is some proof based on my current website rankings in Google.

ISO 27001 Warner Robins – Rankings 1 – 7. Note: most of these listings are links from other websites to my ISO information.
ISO 27001 Macon, GA – Rankings 1 – 3.
Data security Warner Robins – 10 and 11
Social marketing Warner Robins – 4

Content, both on my website as well as content I have added to other websites, is the main factor for my good rankings in just a short amount of time, and if you have not made the effort already, you should strongly consider a website content strategy for SEO. It is pretty simple actually. Make an effort to update/add to your website content a couple of times a month, and if you do not have a blog already, you should add one to your website. Just set a regular schedule to post blog content (generally 2 – 3 times per week), and you will be adding fresh content to your website on a regular basis.

Follow these simple tips, and you will be on your way to increasing your search engine rankings for your small business website. And if you have any additional content advice, please feel free to share in the comments below.
